IN THE MATTER OF )
Commemorating the )
Seventy-Fifth Anniversary of )
the City of Walnut Creek ) RESOLUTION NO. 89/512
WHEREAS, in 1849, William and Caroline Slusher built a cabin
on the banks of a small stream near the intersection of two dusty
roads thereby becoming the first settlers in a tiny community
then known simply as "The Corners" ; and
WHEREAS, a U. S. Post Office was established in 1862 in the
village which was renamed "Walnut Creek, " and railroad service
was introduced in 1891 by Southern Pacific followed by more
homes, schools and businesses; and
WHEREAS, the City of Walnut Creek was incorporated on
October 21, 1914 following a vote of its residents with 127 in
favor and 67 against, and governed by a five member Board of
Trustees; and ,
WHEREAS, following the completion of the San Francisco-
Oakland Bay Bridge and later the Bay Area Rapid Transit System,
with an increased population and new businesses, Walnut Creek was
no longer just a destination for country weekends but a desirable
place where people came to visit, work and live; and
WHEREAS, the residents of Walnut Creek take tremendous pride
in their city, maintaining a high quality of life through careful
development, continuing beautification projects, appreciation of
the arts, consideration for the environment, and recognition of
the role of business and commerce; and
WHEREAS, October 21, 1989 marks the Diamond Jubilee of the
City of Walnut Creek, California.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT BY THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA
COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA RESOLVED that the Seventy-Fifth Anniver-
sary of the City of Walnut Creek is HEREBY COMMEMORATED; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the citizens of Walnut Creek are
COMMENDED on their civic pride, united spirit and careful plan-
ning.
PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board members present on
this 1st day of August, 1989.
I hereby certify that the foregoing is a true and correct
copy of a resolution entered on the minutes of said Board of
Supervisors on the date aforesaid.
