S.3 T'• BOARD OF SUPERVISORS FROM. Sunne Wright McPeakl Introduced September 13 , 1988 , for Costa DATE: Action on September 20 , 1988 COO "1 SUBJECT: Community Nutrition Awareness Campaign SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATIONS) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECONDOMATION Request the Health Services Department and its Public Health Division and Prevention Program to assist in the development of a community nutrition awareness campaign. Such a community education campaign should be modeled after our anti-smoking efforts and should be a companion to those activities. It should implement the recommendations and suggestions . of the Contra Costa County Public and Environmental Health Advisory Board and the Contra Costa Health Coalition. BACKGROUND In August, the Contra Costa Health Coalition ( CCHC) received the attached recommendation from me regarding the Surgeon General' s Report on -Nutrition and the establihsment of a community nutrition awareness campaign. The Executive Committee of the CCHC is recommending that the full Board of Directors vote at our next- meeting (October 3 , 1988) to launch an all-out campaign as discussed in the August 1, 1988, memo. A successful community nutrition awareness campaign must be broad based and involve the leading public health agency, Contra Costa County. Further, our own county Public and Environmental Health Advisory Board has just issued a report addressing nutrition as a major public health concern. It seems both appropriate and timely to act to target improved nutrition as a top priority for Contra Costa County. I recommend that this report become the basis for a concerted effort by the CCHC in the next year. A beginning step would be to invite a knowledgeable nutritionist or panel of experts to address the Board of Directors at the next meeting to discuss the report and a possible plan of action.,, By way of suggestion, I think it would be very exciting for the CCHC to consider one or more of the following possible actions to promote better nutritional behavior and thereby improve health status and control medical costs: Sponsor community educational forums (perhaps in conjunction with the Contra Costa Health Department Prevention Program) ; - Distribute informational/educational fliers at grocery stores; Launch a campaign to get food products labeled with additional nutritional information that discloses calories, fat content and sodium content ( this could include packaged food sold in grocery stores and food served at fast-food establishments and restaurants) ; Seek/sponsor legislation to require food to be labeled with information disclosing calories, fat content (by grams and percentage) and sodium content. I think the impact and success of our campaign to reduce tobacco use should be followed by a similar campaign to reduce fat and sodium intake and improve nutrition. I proposed this concept at the January meeting, but now the Surgeon General' s report provides an excellent opportunity to take aggressive action. , SWM:ksm Attachments Koop -sa s fat I n causes of .
