SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION I. RECOMMENDED ACTION Authorize the expenditure of $600 for the support and follow-up of a one-day workshop for Departmental Volunteer Administrators to be held on October 7, 1988. II. FISCAL IMPACT The direct cost of the one-day workshop will. not exceed $600 which includes cost of training, facilities and food for approximately 30 county employees responsible for coordinating volunteer programs in the various departments. III. REASON FOR RECOMMENDATION There are 16 departments operating volunteer programs and each department has assigned staff responsible for the coordination and supervision of the program. Except in a very few departments, which have full-time paid professional volunteer administrators, volunteer programs are supervised by personnel who have other primary responsibilities. There has been considerable turnover in these positions and most have had little or no training in the conduct of volunteer programs within the county.- A one-day workshop, under the direction of a professional trainer, will help improve the overall quality of the county's volunteer program by providi'ng needed information, establishing a county-wide network of volunteer administrators, and by giving the coordinators an opportunity to exchange views and experiences. IV. BACKGROUND The Board of Supervisors has continuously expressed its appreciation of the value of=voslunteers to the county programs and to the programs conducted by private agencies . In September 1978, the Board authorized the establishment of a volunteer program committee and adopted a statement of the structure, function and composition of the committee. One of the functions approved by the Board was that the committee will offer programs to promote continuous training for Volunteer Program Administrators. V. CONSEQUENCES OF NEGATIVE ACTION Failure to approve the expenditure of these funds will make it more difficult to provide a well coordinated county-wide volunteer program administered by trained staff. CONTINUED ON ATTACHMENT: _ YES SIGNATURE: RECOMMENDATION OF COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR RECOMMENDATION BOARD COMMITTEE APPROVE OTHER - SIGNATURE(S): ACTION OF BOARD ON Septemh.Pr 3, 198 8 APPROVED AS RECOMMENDED X OTHER VOTE OF SUPERVISORS i HEREBY CERTIFY THAT THIS IS A TRUE X UNANIMOUS (ABSENT -- AND CORRECT COPY OF AN ACTION TAKEN AYES: NOES.
