SUBJECT: P-300 Request to Downgrade the Position #0037, Engineering Technician
Supervisor, to Computer Operator
Carl Bowles, Engineering Technician Supervisor, handling the Public Works
computer operations, recently retired and the Department has reviewed the
job duties of that position and what the needs of the Department will be
in the future. The duties which Mr. Bowles performed are being revised
and the management responsibility for computer operations will be assigned
to Carolyn Clausen, Word Processing Manager , while the computer operator
responsibilities will be assigned to the individual who occupies Mr. Bowles'
previous position. In reviewing the job specifications currently in existence,
the computer operator classification is most-closely aligned with what
the duties of the computer operator will be.
These duties are listed below:
1. Responsibility for scheduled and unscheduled production jobs, daily,
weekly, monthly, semi-annual and annual . Includes such items as fuel
tape reports, syslog reports and others.
2. Distribution of printed output.
3. Maintenance of tape library.
4. Maintenance of master documentation file.
5. Initial trouble shooting for computer equipment.
6. Ordering and maintenance of supplies; forms, ribbons, tapes, labels,
etc.
7. Monitoring operation of equipment, including notification to supervisor
of problems found, and responsible for service calls when so advised.
8. Operation of Data Processing equipment including operator console,
tape drives, disc drives, card reader/punch card devices, etc.
9. Responsibility for system shutdowns/bringups for routine maintenance,
minor problems, etc.

cleanup of computer room at periodic intervals, ensuring that computer
room temperature is kept stable, ensuring that computer roan is available
when necessary and secured at all other times, etc.
t
12. Performs data entry.
13. Answers to Word Processing Manager, who will have responsibility for
overall management of the computer operations.
14. Miscellaneous duties as assigned.
This position is needed as soon as possible, as it is a one position class,
and it is an opportunity for Public Works to reduce the number of management
positions, as the work duties are being reorganized.
If you have any questions regarding this P-300, please contact me at extension
2628. As we had indicated our list of priorities could change, and this
P-300 action is requested as soon as possible and should be placed close
to the top of our list of priorities.
