Contra Costa Health Plan
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve and authorize Executive Director, Contra Costa Health Plan, to execute on
behalf of the County a contract with Great Republic Life Insurance Company of
Santa Barbara to provide excess liability insurance for private members of The Contra
Costa Health Plana Term of this policy year is July 1, 1988 to June 30, 1989.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The total annual premium depends upon level of private membership. Based upon
current membership of 3,499, the annual premium would be $70,540.
BACKGROUND:
Since The Health Plan .began as a federally qualified HMO in July of 1980, Contra Costa
County has purchased excess liability insurance for the members of The Contra Costa
Health Plan who are private enrollees. This includes those County employees and other
employees of public agencies with whom The Health Plan has contracts, as well as
private group enrollments and private individual enrollments.
This policy covers health services provided to these individuals above a $50,000 annual
deductible for each individual up ,to a maximum lifetime benefit of $2,000,000 for each
individual under certain conditions delineated in the insurance policy.
Excess liability insurance coverage is a sound precaution as one or two catastrophic
illnesses could exceed the premiums paid for this insurance.
