FROM: Supervisor Tom Torlakson

DATE: July 19, 1988 CoUy ,
SUBJECT: CONSIDER ESTABLISHING A PROCESS FOR REQUIRING COMMERCIAL
BUSINESSES TO CLEAN UP LITTER WITHIN 200 FEET OF ESTABLISHMENT
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Refer to the Internal Operations
Committee, the Community Development Department and County Counsel to
pursue the feasibility of requiring fast food operations or
"convenience marts" , by ordinance or condition of approval of their
land use permit, to patrol their premises and atleast 200 feet beyond
their boundaries for litter pickup and post a bond to cover cost of _ .
Titter clean up in case business fails to comply.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION I am noticing a significant
proliferation of litter around fast food establishments and
. "convenience mart" establishments--both those that are free standing: '
and others associated with gas stations. Although these resaturants
are very cooperative about patrolling their premises, identifiable
litter such as paper wrapping, styrofoam cups and paper cartons are
often seen for blocks strewn along our streets.
