MATTER OF RECORD
SUBJECT: Lafayette Constitutional Bicentennial Gazebo
The following item were brought to the attention of Board
members after the agenda was posted, and the Board unanimously agreed
on the need to take action.
S. 4 ADOPTED resolution congratulating the citizens of
Lafayette on the dedication of their Constitutional'.Bicentennial
Gazebo.

Constitutional Bicentennial ) Resolution No. : 87/580

WHEREAS the United States celebrated the Bicentennial of
the signing of our Constitution, a document unique in the world
for the freedoms it ensures ; and
WHEREAS citizens across the country organized civic events
and celebrations in honor of our Constitution and the men who so
carefully crafted it ; and
WHEREAS the City of Lafayette, named after the Marquis de
Lafayette, French citizen and hero of the Revolutionary War, who
came to America to help in the Revolution and gave much of his
personal fortune to the battle for liberty, was one of only 300
official Constitutional Bicentennial cities and the only one in
the Bay Area; and
WHEREAS the citizens of Lafayette resolved to build a
permanent memorial to the rights and responsibilities enshrined
in our Constitution; and
WHEREAS the citizens of Lafayette built a gazebo in Lafayette
recalling similar garden- pavillions enjoyed by George Washington
at Mount Vernon and James Madison for whom Thomas Jefferson designed
one; and
WHEREAS the LafaYette Constitutional Bicentennial gazebo
was built entirely with donated materials and labor supplied
primarily by American Legion Post 517 and Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post 8063 with landscaping by the Lafayette Garden Club; and .
WHEREAS the Lafayette Constitutional Bicentennial gazebo
is a work of art and civic pride to be used by many generations
to come who will see in it not only a reflection of their many
freedoms as Americans, but a reminder of the slower and gentler
era that begat our Constitution.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors
of the County of Contra Costa, California, hereby CONGRATULATES
the citizens of Lafayette on the dedication of their Constitutional
Bicentennial gazebo and COMMENDS their volunteer efforts to create
a lasting reminder of our Constitution' s Bicentennial.
Passed and adopted on September 22, 1987 , by unanimous
vote of the Board members present .
I hereby certify that the foregoing is a true and correct
copy of a resolution entered in the minutes of the Board of
Supervisors on the date aforesaid.
