OFFICIAL JOB CLASSIFICATION WORKING JOB TITLE yt;:••.•• Place of Work and Assigned Hours Time 11,quired Description of Work., Direct treatment: provide ongoing therapy to orthopedically handicapped children ages 0-21. Orthopedic handicaps include children with cerebral palsy, neuromuscular disorders such as muscular dystrophies and atrophies, amputees, physical handicaps due to trauma or disease process. Therapy incudes direct treatment to the child, continuing evaluation, continuing contact with the parent regarding proper handling and positioning of the child at home and keeping the parent informed of his child ' s therapy, program; continuing contact with the school personnel regarding proper handling and positioning of the child in the classroom and keeping them informed of the child ' therapy program. The therapist is responsible for the evaluation of the child, determine; the proper treatment program, instructs the parent in a home program of therapy if needed, instructs the therapy aide in a program of treatment if indicated and carries through with the treatment program. The therapist supervises the therapy aides in their work with the Childrens treatment programs and in their duties as related to the therapy program. The number of children seen by' an individual therapist varies, however, the average number of children seen per full time therapist is 25. The number of times per week that a child is seen varies and this is determine( by the therapist as to the needs of each child. Consultation: Physicians: therapist is responsible for keeping the c i s physic an informed of the child' s total program and ' makes appropriate recommendations based on her ongoing evaluation of the child. The therapist works with the physician as part of a team to meet the needs of the child in regards to treatment, bracing, equipment needs, and program planning. The physicians the therapist works with are primarily orthopedists and pediatrician however she also deals with other physicians such as urologists, physiatrists, neurologists, neurosurgeons as needed to effectively plan for the Childs care. County Agencies: The therapist is responsible for keeping the other professionals involved with the. child' s care informed as to the child ' s program and works with them as a team to effectively plan the child' s total program. These professionals come from such services as public health nursing, social service, social welfare, protective service. Public Aaencies: The therapist acts as a consultant and may also be part of a team involved with the child to such agencies as United Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy Association, Regional Center of the East Bdy. Sometimes when assistance is needed to purchase equipment, the therapist acts as the child ' s adovcate to other agencies such as Crippled Childrens Society, Avery Fuller Foundation, to obtain needed funds for the family. Parents: Recommendations are given to parents when buying , appliances for their child, when adapting their homes to. make it easier for their child to carry out daily living skills. The therapist makes a home visit when appropriate and as determined by the chills need, to assist and/or teach the parent effective means of working or handling their handicapped child. School Personnel: Acts as part of theschool team to effectively plan the ch 1 s program. The team included the princip?,, psychologist, teacher, and nurse. The therapist is also a consultant, to ancillary personnel working with the child such as remedial P.E. and the PHRC personnel!. . Other staffs : therapist gives as needed consultation to other programs such as Head Start regarding programs and/or the need for services for specific children.- AX In the performance of consultation services, the therapist travels 75 to other agencies. She attends neuromuscular clinics held at the local M.T.U . ; also attends clinics at Shriners, Children' s Hospital of the East Bay, Stanford Rehab. Engineering, and may attend with the child when seen privately by a physician. B . . De:3c r;-b�Ion of :-nor : Pa�Je 2 The therapist, also goes with the child when he/she is being se-an by the orthotist or prosthetist to be measured and/or fitted ,with an orthopedic .appliance. EVALUATIONS: in addition to evaluation of one ' s ovm patient load, ' the t.hera.pist eiraluates children prior to being seen by the clinic physician to determine the need for therapy services and prepares a 1•r'ritten report of each evaluation. Written Reuorts: Reports are written on each child at least once every 6 mon s or more often as deemed necessary by the therapist to record changes in the child' s physical picture . Reports are generaAly typed by the therapist and she makes sure that they are sent to the appropriate people, e.g. the chills physician and the Martinez office for the Childs record there. Reports are also written fns' the school admissions committee. Record Keeping: Therapist is responsible for kbeping accurate records oall treatments, evaluations, and consultations given to each child seen. Therapist prepares a quarterly report for the state records. She keeps accurate running notes on each child seen describing their day to day therapy program. Maintain a tickler file on all the children seen in the neuro- , muGcular clinics. This involves 6 physicians. It must be kept up to date regarding ;when child is to be seen next, when last seen; must coordinate with two other M.T.U.s since children from their area are also seen at this M.T.U. for clinic. Make up clinic list for clerks in Martinez, check to see if children are coming, notify supervisor when additional clinics are d�,eeeded or if herei is no need for a clinic, decide after talking Ivith other therapists who is to be seen. Therapist is responsible for keeping the medical chart up to date regarding surgeries, other medical services, change in home status, charge of address or phone number and make certain the Vartinez office is notified of theses. Equipment Construction: Supervises aides and also does the .:1 _ actual construction off` adaptive equipment to meet the needs of the children. Budget Preparation: Determine the needs of the therapy department end order the necessary equipment for the treatment of the children S seen in therapy. Inservice to School Staff: provide staff at inservice meetings ideas in treatment and nein concepts in equipment, new concepts in handling and keep .them up to date on servttes available. Assist i� in the training of staff members in working and handling handicapped children. 1,4eetings and Inservice: Attend once a month therapy meetings that provide insery ce raining for the therapists. Attend meetings as called by the administrative staff. Attend once weekly staff meetings for our local M.T.U. Fill in for supervisor if necessary at Parent Club meetings. Attend school open house once yearly in the evening. Attend staffing meetings as necessary for program planning for individual children. Attend as a team merrber parent conferances. Attend monthly meetings for the purposes of planning the older student .pro gram. I i i
