TD BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
FROM: Supervisor Sunne Wright McPeak Colra

DATE: !August 4 , 1987 110Fcam
SUBJECT: Invitation to Cities and Developers to Explore
Local Efforts to Encourage Establishment of the
Contra Costa California State University Campus
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECCMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION
Authorize Chair of the Board of Supervisors to sign letters
inviting the cities of Concord and Walnut Creek and the
surrounding landowners to explore the feasibility of local
planning and development efforts augmenting and encouraging
the establishment of the Contra Costa California State
University site.
BACKGROUND
The first challenge to establishing the Contra Costa
California State University campus is the construction of a
Learning Center on the Concord site. A pledge of a
significant contribution for the second building has been
made by a local civic leader. This would be an excellent
beginning for the college. However, the key question is:
how long will this take? In order to encourage the
feasibility of getting the campus open sooner rather than
later, it would be appropriate to explore with the cities of
Concord and Walnut Creek and the landowners adjacent to the
college site to assess the feasibility of local actions that
would be an incentive to the State to not only keep its
commitment to Contra Costa County but also to step up its
efforts.
