Cisterman, Director of Personnel Contra Costa DATE: June 22, 1987 County SUBJECT: Personnel Department's Petty Cash Revolving Fund SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATIONS) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION Recommendations: 1. APPROVE increasing the Personnel Department's Petty Cash Revolving Fund by $300.00 to $500.00 2. AUTHORIZE the Auditor-Controller to disburse the additional $300.00 to the Director of Personnel . Background: On March 2, 1987 the Employee Wellness Program established the Contra Costa County Exercise Program. The program currently has five low-intensity, noontime and after work exercise classes in four locations, and has approximately 120 regular program participants. The rationale behind establishing this program is the belief that exercise is an essential ingredient to overall wellness. It can improve physical strength and flexibility as well as to positively affect many health related conditions. Exercise also provides a relief valve for the physical effects of stress and helps improve mental functioning while improving self image. In order to motivate employees to attend classes on a regular, ongoing basis and to provide recognition and reinforcement for those who are attending, the Employee Wellness Program has developed an incentive plan. This plan utilizes various types of promotional incentives to accomplish this goal . They include, but are not limited to such items as: - Celebrate Health T-Shirts, - Exercise Bags, - Wrist Weights, - G-ift certificates, - Award plaques, - Luncheon gift certificates, - Certificates for free health-medical tests related to fitness and wellness, - Certificates for half price fitness classes and two-for-one classes, and other promotional events and prizes which should encourage continued participation in the program. The Personnel Department's Petty Cash Revolving Fund has been in the amount of $200.00 for at least ten years. With the expanded Wellness and Exercise programs, an additional $300.00 is sorely needed. The larger petty cash fund for the Personnel Department would enable the Employee Wellness Program to obtain various incentives and promotional prizes on a cash basis to award small cash prizes, and to ensure that they can be distributed on a timely basis. In order to assure the flexibility necessary to implement a creative and effective incentive program, the Employee Wellness Program encourages the Board's support and approval of this. Revolving Fund.
