HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 07281987 - T.1 THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA Adopted this Order on July 28, 1987 , by the following vote: AYES: Supervisors Powers, Fanden, Schroder, Torlakson, McPeak NOES: None ABSENT: None ABSTAIN: None ------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------ SUBJECT: Proposed Legislation SB 1691 (Boatwright) Senator Daniel E. Boatwright appeared before the Board and outlined the provisions of proposed legislation SB 1691, relating to indeterminate sentencing. He noted that the Lawrence Singleton case had drawn attention to flaws in our criminal justice system and parole process. Senator Boatwright stated that SB 1691 is designed to correct some of those problems by establishing indeterminate prison sentences for murder, attempted murder, voluntary manslaughter, rape, mayhem, and any other felony where great bodily injury is inflicted. He advised that the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on the bill will begin in late summer or early fall, and requested the Board' s support of the proposed legislation. Supervisor Tom Torlakson commented on the costs involved in building and staffing new jails and requested that a meeting be arranged with Senator Boatwright to discuss financing of future jail staffing. Board members being in agreement, IT IS BY THE BOARD ORDERED that a position of support is ADOPTED for proposed legislation SB 1691 relating to indeterminate sentencing. IT IS FURTHER ORDERED that the County Administrator is REQUESTED to communicate the Board' s position to the County' s legislative delegation.
