Reclassify person and position #65-370 of Departmental Computer Operator (LJWC) at salary level C5-1232 ($1557-1893) to the new class of Senior Departmental Computer Operator. Amend Resolution 71/17 establishing positions and resolutions allocating classes to the Basic/Exempt Salary Schedule, as described above. Effective: day following Board action. (M347) 2185z. 0.Iry y a _k Proposed Salary: C5-1330 ($2738-2088) Contra Costa County June 1987 SENIOR DEPARTMENTAL--COMPUTER OPERATOR DEFINITION: Under general supervision, to set up, monitor and operate data processing minicomputer equipment, including various peripheral devices; to install , maintain and trouble-shoot for computer terminals and related peripheral computer equipment in a department with a large networking system; to provide technical assistance to both professional and clerical staff in the department; and to do related work as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Positions in this class are found in line departments with medium to large scale tape and disk mini computer systems. Although operation of the computer system is the primary assignment, operators may perform a variety of record processing activities in support of the system. Incumbents may be required to work shift assignments. Incumbents are only found in departments with a large networking system, and function independent of data processing supervisory or lead personnel . This class is distinguished from the class of Senior Computer Operator in that the latter is found only in the County's Central Data Processing Unit; distinguished from the class of Departmental Computer Operator in that the latter class does not have the high degree of expertise and function with the same independence of action, and is not expected to install , maintain and trouble-shoot computer equipment in the department. . Mini-computer systems are defined as those capable of processing a variety of programs and data processing jobs simultaneously and accommodating an extensive network of peripheral devices such as terminals, printers and tape or disk drives. Such systems require direct operator support and may require the regular support of a full-time programmer. They are distinguished from stand-alone personal or micro computers which generally run data processing jobs sequentially, utilize pre-designed software and support a limited number of peripheral devices. TYPICAL TASKS: Operates a variety of data processing equipment, including the computer console and peripheral devices such as printers, magnetic tape drives, disk drives, card readers/ punch devices and telecommunications equipment; observes equipment in operation, being alert to any malfunction or situation requiring corrective action; uses systems software and applications programs; uses manuals to research operating problems and responds as directed; provides technical training and ongoing assistance to both professional and clerical staff using the terminals and peripheral computer equipment; researches for improved software packages and computer equipment based on needs of staff within the department; installs, maintains and trouble-shoot for computer terminals and related peripheral computer equipment in the department with limited assistance for equipment vendors and professional data processing personnel within the County; may operate CRT's and paper tape readers; may work in the tape library, control or staging sections; may inventory, order and store supplies; may prepare and maintain a variety of records. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: possession of a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency or high school proficiency certificate. Experience: Two years of full-time or its equivalent experience as a computer operator for a medium to large scale tape and disk computer system. KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Good knowledge of methods, principles and machines used in computer processing; good knowledge of modern office methods and procedures; working knowledge of various trouble-shooting techniques for computer terminals and related peripheral computer equipment; ability to install most kinds of commonly used computer equipment; ability to operate a mini-computer; ability to prepare input for processing and output for distribution; ability to effectively operate computer terminals; ability to interpret and follow detailed, precise written and oral operating instructions; ability to get along well with others.
