BACKGROUND: The California Conservation Corps' (CCC) current lease with the Navy expires in December, 1987. Since a significant amount of the CCC's activities take place in the East Bay, it has been looking for a new site in both Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. At a July 23, 1986 meeting, the CCC made a 90 day commitment to pursue the acquisition of the Fairmede Elementary School located in Richmond. This site would be the headquarters for the CCC's operations in five counties including . Contra Costa, Alameda, San Francisco, Marin, and San Mateo and would house between 72 and 100 young adults. It should be understood that the CCC already helps the East Bay by stationing two fire-fighting units here for six months of the year. More importantly, the CCC instills young people with a sense of community responsibility while providing many useful and needed services for the community. By moving the headquarters to Contra Costa County, the CCC would also be bringing over $500,000 worth of business to local venders. The CCC move to Contra Costa County would therefore prove to be a great asset to the people of this county.
