RAINEY, Sheriff-Coroner Contra Costa DATE: July 24, 1985 County SUBJECT: ACCEPTANCE OF VEHICLE DONATED TO THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT CRIME PREVENTION UNIT. SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDED ACTION The Board of Supervisors accept from Mr. Bill Shepherd, owner of Shepherd Pontiac, Concord, California, on behalf of the Sheriff-Coroner's Department Crime Prevention Unit his donation of a 1976 Mercury automobile. This vehicle will be designated as a "Talking Police Car" and when properly equipped electronically, it will be used by the Crime Prevention Unit in presentations to school .children dealing with several child safety issues. FINANCIAL IMPACT Minimal - operating costs to include fuel, maintenance and insurance. REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATION This vehicle, when properly equipped, will be a valuable asset to the Crime Prevention Unit for making presentations dealing with child safety. Several "Talking Police Cars" are being used throughout the state and have proved to be a valuable aid in child safety presentations. Additional donations are anticipated to cover the cost of the needed electronic equipment.
