111. REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATION
To increase community knowledge of AIDS risk factors to promote risk reduction
and decreased transmission.
Background
AIDS has been recognized as a major epidemic, worldwide, with the number of cases
doubling every 12 months. There are now over 10,000 cases known. J'nContra Costa
County, 43 cases have been diagnosed since 1982. This represents more than
twice the number of all cases reported to this county by January 1985. Although
a virus causing this immune defiency and probable routes of transmission have now
been identified, a vaccine has not been developed, and at present there is no
known cure. Both males and females can harbor the virus without having symptoms.
Transmission to sexual partners or through blood contact can occur even without
symptoms.
Because of the rapid increase in cases and known routes of transmission without
known cure, the major thrust of the AIDS program is education of the community.
This will reduce risk and decrease transmission of the virus. The final goal is
reduction of the number of persons who develop AIDS.
IV. CONSEQUENCES OF NEGATIVE ACTION
Not applicable.
