SUBJECT: LONE TREE WAY AT ANTIOCH GOLF COURSE
Specific Requests or Recommendations & Background & Justification
RECOMMENDATION
Accept report.
BACKGROUND
On August 21, 1984, Supervisor Torlakson requested a report on a request he received from
the Antioch Golf Course Corporation. The Directors of the Golf Course are concerned about
the curve alignment on Lone Tree Way and the potential of accidents to the users of the
access road to the Golf Course. As a result they are requesting that the County improve
the curve alignment and widen Lone Tree Way to provide left-turn channelization at the
entrance to the Golf Course.
Upon checking, the Public Works' staff found that there have been a few reported accidents
on the curve immediately north of the access road to the golf course. However, over the
past four years none of these accidents involved motorists entering or leaving the golf
course. The majority of these accidents were caused by motorists who were driving in
excess of the posted speed limit or who violated other provisions of the Vehicle Code.
The Public Works Department has made a field review of this portion of Lone Tree Way.
The number of vehicles turning left from Lone Tree Way into the Golf Course is fairly
low. For this reason it is our opinion that widening the road to provide left-turn chan-
nelization is not warranted at County expense.
The County's ultimate plan for this portion of Lone Tree Way calls for the road to be
realigned and for a much larger radius curve to be constructed farther to the east. At
the present time the County has not acquired the ultimate road right of way or the funds
to reconstruct this portion of the road to its ultimate alignment. The realignment of
this road will probably occur when the adjacent private property is developed.
The driveways to the golf course intersect Lone Tree Way at sharp skew angles. The driveway
connections are not good and they tend to encourage users to enter and exit Lone Tree
Way in an unsafe manner. The responsibility for improving these driveways rests with
the golf course. It is recommended that the Directors of the golf course consider recon-
structing their main access road connection to Lone Tree Way to reduce the potential user
conflicts. The Public Works Department will install additional traffic s ' s on Lone
Tree Way in advance of the access road to the golf course.
