HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 10042004 - 71-813 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STAVE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter of Japanese } Steel Imparts. } RESOLUTION NUMBER 71/813 WHEREAS this Board has received communications from execu- tives and employees of the West Coast Steel Industry requesting with urgency that Congressional and Presidential action be taken so as to restrict Japanese steel imports to the United States; and WHEREAS in such communications it has been pointed out spe- cifically that Japanese steel producers have competitive advantages in terms of Government subsidies, marketing agreements, and low cost labor, and as a result are able to sell steel products at a lower price than is possible with respect to production of steel product producers in the United States; and WHEREAS in such communications it has been also pointed out that the surcharge imposed by Presidential action does not apply to fabricated steel products and as a result Japanese steel producers have a competitive advantage on sales within the United States and particularly on the West Coast; and WHEREAS it has been further shown that Japanese steel imports have the effect of cutting back steel product sales within the United States and in turn seriously diminishing employment opportu- nities for experienced steel workers; and , WHEREAS the steel industry in the United States is the best in the world from the standpoint of technology and productivity, is the backbone of defense requirements, and is a potent factor in the United States economy through its production for countless other domestic, industries; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT BY THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF THE COUNTY OF CONTRA COSTA, CALIFORNIA RESOLVED that it implores the Congress and the President of the United States to take action such that limitations are placed upon Japanese steel imports so that the domestic 'steel industry on the West Coast and elsewhere may compete on an equitable basis with Japanese steel producers and continue to play its traditional and vital role in production and employment for the benefit of the United States of America. PASSED AND ADOPTED this 23rd day of November, 1971 by the following vote of the Board: AYES; Supervisors A. M. Dias„ J. E. Moriarty, W. N. Boggess, E. A. Linscheid, J. P. Kenny. NOES: None.
