HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01312003 - 99-380 THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA Adopted this Order of Auzust 3, 1999 ,by the following vote: AYES: Supervisor Gioia, Uilkema, Gerber, DeSaulnier, Caneiami.11a NOES: None ABSENT: None ABSTAIN: None RESoLuTioN No. 99/380 In The Matter of Proclaiming ) Contra Costa County as a "Safe Community" ) Whereas, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA) created the "Safe Community" approach to promote motor vehicle safety and decrease the rates of injury and death associated with motor vehicle crashes; and, Whereas, the "Safe Community" approach not only encourages comprehensive,broad-based efforts in traffic safety,but also increases awareness of other types of injury prevention so that in addition to safe roads,the Safe Community can also have safe homes, safe schools, safe playgrounds, and safe workplaces; and, Whereas, Contra Costa County was recognized by NHTSA in its 1997 annual report for the innovative, community-wide efforts it has taken to prevent injury; and, Whereas, chief among these efforts are traffic safety activities coordinated by the Community Wellness&Prevention Program of Contra Costa Health Services,including projects aclicnowledged by NHTSA as "best practices for a safe community" such as seat belt use promotion; child passenger safety training; car seat inspections;bicycle helmet use promotion; bicycle safety events and traffic safety courses for children; share the road programs for bicyclists and motorists; and safe bicycle commute promotion; and, Whereas,the Community Wellness&Prevention Program received grant funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety to promote safe communities. This Safe Community grant supports a project focused primarily on child passenger safety, coordinated with the Contra Costa Child Injury Prevention Coalition; and, Whereas, this project has combined with past and ongoing Community Wellness&Prevention Program efforts in drowning prevention, firearm safety,home safety,traffic and bicycle safety, and violence prevention to form a true spectrum of preventative activities that has the ultimate goal of making Contra Costa County a"Safe Community„for all residents. Naw, Therefore Be It Resolved,that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County, California, does hereby declare Contra Costa County as a Safe Community.
