HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01312003 - 99-379 BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA L, The Matter of PROCLAMENG ) RESOLUTION NO. 99/379 August 26, 1999 as Women's Equality ) Day to reaffirm the right of women to vote ) in all public elections ) RYERF.AS, on August 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U. S. Constitution affirmed the right of women to vote in all public elections; and, lWYEREAS, it had taken American women and their male supporters 72 years of ceaseless campaigning to win this basic democratic right; and, WHEREAS, since the 50th anniversary of that historic date, annual observances of the anniversary of women's suffrage have taken place on August 26; and, WHEREAS, in 1971, Representative Bella Abzug (D-NY) introduced a Congressional Resolution to formally designate August 26 as Women's Equality Day on the federal calendar, in recognition of both the anniversary of suffrage and of women's continued efforts toward equal rights in the United States; and, WHEREAS, the measure was duly passed by the House of Representatives and the Senate, and was signed by the President; and, WHEREAS, every year since, the resolution has been reaffirmed by the federal government and celebratory Women's Equality Day programs have been held in workplaces and communities nationwide. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County dues honor and recognize Women's Equality Day on August 26, 1999.
