HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 11041997 - 97-605 c. �7 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter of Commending Robert Perez for receiving the Resolution 97/605 Mariner's Medal for his valiant service In the Merchant Marine during World War H WHEREAS, Robert Perez, Able Seaman on the SS Guatemala Victory, was wounded on or about November 20, 1944 when a ship near to his ship exploded due to enemy action, and WHEREAS, Mr. Perez was treated aboard the ship at the time of the injury, but removal of the foreign body was not completed until his surgery in September of 1981; and WHEREAS, the Mariner's Medal was established by Congress in 1943; and WHEREAS, the Mariner's Medal according to Congressional direction, is awarded to merchant seamen who, while serving on any vessel in the American Merchant Marine during the war period from 1941 1947, were wounded or suffered physical injury as a result of an act of any enemy of the United States; and WHEREAS, in August of 1997, the Maritime Administration, based on information provided by Captain Nolan, bestowed upon Robert Perez the Mariner's Medal; and WHEREAS, this medal will be officially presented to Mr. Perez at the Richmond Museum of History's Veteran's Day celebration on November 11, 1997: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County commends Robert Perez on his valiant service to the United States and congratulates him on receiving the Mariner's Medal as a tribute to his service during World War II.
