HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 10211997 - 97-566 PZ THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA Adopted this Order on October 21, 1997 by the TLllowing vote: AYES: Supervisors Rogers, Uilkema, Gerber, Canciamilla, and UeSaulnier NOES: None ABSENT: None ABSTAIN: None RESOLUTION NO. 97/ 566 SUBJECT: Proclaim the week of October ) 18-26, 1997 as Second Chance ) Week in Contra Costa County ) The Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County RESOLVES that: WHEREAS, Contra Costa County supports conserving natural resources and protecting the environment; and WHEREAS, waste reduction through reuse is an ideal approach to conserving natural resources that focuses on the reuse of materials and/or products rather than the consumption of virgin materials, additionally reuse conserves more resources than recycling because reuse does not require additional energy, water or materials to reprocess into new usable items; and WHEREAS, waste reduction through reuse conserves natural resources, aids charitable organizations, supports local reuse businesses and saves residents and businesses money; and WHEREAS, by focusing attention on waste reduction, Contra Costa County continues to strive to meet the challenges of AB 939 which requires jurisdictions to reduce the amount of waste disposed of in landfills by 50% by the year 2000; and WHEREAS, Second Chance Week is an opportunity for government, business, and environmental organizations to recognize the potential of waste reduction through reuse and to work together to inform people about the variety of ways to give used items a "second chance"; and WHEREAS, Contra Costa County would like to join jurisdictions across the State in recognizing this first annual Second Chance Week which will feature a series of events across the state that promote the beneficial practice of reuse, repair and resale; and WHEREAS, Contra Costa County, in cooperation with various jurisdictions within the County, has developed a comprehensive Reuse Directory that includes information about reuse businesses throughout the County which either accept or sell used items which will be distributed to over 100,000 residents during Second Chance Week; and NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that October 18-26, 1997, is Second Chance Week and Contra Costa County does hereby urge residents of the County to participate in local and regional reuse activities, including obtaining and utilizing the new free County Reuse Directory.
