NOVEMBER, 1995 NATIVE AMERICAN ]
HERITAGE MONTH IN CONTRA ]
COSTA COUNTY ]
WHEREAS, Native Americans were the first people living in this area, always respecting
and living in harmony with their environment, and continuing to live in Contra Costa
County as indicated by 5,000 families being identified as residing here currently; and
WHEREAS, Native Americans are making a conscious attempt to preserve and pass on the
ways of their ancestors by working with Native American children in Contra Costa County;
and
WHEREAS, California Days are held yearly on Mt. Diablo for K-5 Native American
students, teaching them plant identification, acorn pounding, tracking and working with
soap stone; and
WHEREAS, the ways of our ancestors, outdoor heritage program teach 6-12th grade Native
American students at Wagner Ranch, about traditional crafts, obsidian flaking, archery,
tracking, gear making, tepee set up and other traditional ways; and
WHEREAS, Pow-Wows, and inter-tribal gatherings are held annually in West, Central and
East Contra Costa County, featuring "honoring dances", foods, games and things to see or
trade:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa
County honor, recognize and acknowledge the many contributions made by the Native
American community and declare
November, 1995 as
NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH
in Contra Costa County, and encourage educational organizations, businesses and
governmental agencies to celebrate this month.
PASSED by vote of the Board members present on this 24th day of October, 1995.
