HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 01171995 - 95-11 ` 5J IN SUPPORT OF ZERO ] RESOLUTION NUMBER 95/11 TOLERANCE OF WEAPON USE ] BY STUDENTS IN OUR SCHOOLS ] WHEREAS, the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors believes that all students have the right to attend campuses which are safe and secure; and WHEREAS, the Board of Supervisors believes that a beginning step toward safer schools includes participation of parents, students, teachers, administrators, law enforcement officials, juvenile justice officials, and community agencies in the development of a comprehensive plan that focuses on high expectations and student performance; and WHEREAS, the maintenance of safe and orderly school environments is a high priority of parents, students, school district staffs, the Boards of Education and the Board of Supervisors; and WHEREAS, the Board of Supervisors believes that students cannot benefit fully from an educational program unless they attend school regularly in an environment which is free from physical and psychological harm; and WHEREAS, the California Education Code requires boards of education to hold students accountable for school related acts of willful misconduct, including the possession of weapons and other injurious objects and supports finding alternative forms of education for students removed from schools for possession of weapons . NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors joins with Contra Costa County Boards of Education in supporting the Zero Tolerance Project, a partnership between school districts, law enforcement agencies,the probation department, and the juvenile justice system, which establishes a goal of weapons- free schools . The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors shall support and implement the procedures set forth in the Project in order to promote weapons-free schools . PASSED by vote of the Board members present on this 17th day of January, 1995.
