In the Matter of Congratulating )
Gino Torretta ) Resolution No.: 9 3/15
1992 Heisman Trophy Winner )
WHEREAS Gino Torretta received the Heisman Memorial Trophy for 1992, recognizing
him as the outstanding college football player in the United States, winning 1,400 first-place
votes from the country's sportswriters and sportscasters; and
WHEREAS Gino Torretta led the Miami University Hurricanes to a 26-1 record as the
starting quarterback, compiling school records in passing yardage, completions, and total
offense; and
WHEREAS Gino Torretta passed, ran, and read defenses so brilliantly that he was
awarded collegiate honors including All American, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award,
Italian-American Athlete of the Year, selection to the Hitachi/CFA Scholar Athlete team, and
WHEREAS Gino Torretta graduated from Miami University in only 3 1/2 years with a
3.4 GPA and a major in business management, is currently studying for his MBA, and
WHEREAS Gino Torretta found time during his college years to work with youth
programs in the Miami area aimed at drug abuse prevention and made an NCAA-sponsored
commercial against drug abuse, using his acting talents honed from childhood; and
WHEREAS Gino Torretta received his diploma from Pinole Valley High School, the
youngest of the four talented Torretta brothers, and was recruited by Washington State, the
University of Washington, Stanford and UC Berkeley, as well as the University of Miami; and
WHEREAS Gino Torretta excelled at almost every sport to which he turned his energies
including golfing, surfing, baseball, skiing, skateboarding, and surfing; and
WHEREAS Gino Torretta returns to his hometown the weekend of January 16 and 17,
1993, for a celebration of his achievements and the Torretta family contributions to youth
sports.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of
Contra Costa, California, hereby CONGRATULATES Gino Torretta on being awarded the
Heisman Trophy as a cap to an illustrious career at the University of Miami, COMMENDS
Gino Torretta for his dedication to youth, their welfare and athletic opportunities, and
EXTENDS TO Gino Torretta its best wishes for a successful athletic and business career.
PASSED and ADOPTED this twelfth day of January, 1993, by unanimous vote of the
Board members present.
