HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTIONS - 10011991 - 91-640 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA.COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In The Matter Of Proclaiming ) October 7, 1991 as ) "Child Health Day" ) RESOLUTION NO.91/640 WHEREAS, the President of the United States proclaims, each year, the first Monday in October to be Child Health Day. Child Health Day will be celebrated on Monday October 7 with a national symposium in Washington entitled: "Looking Out: Understanding and Preventing Childhood Injuries." WHEREAS, on Child Health Day the Contra Costa Childhood Injury Prevention Coalition and the Contra Costa Childrens Coalition reaffirms their resolve that all of Contra Costa's children should be protected from the hazards and risks that might threaten their life and health. Providing a safe, secure environment for our children is of paramount importance to us a professionals, parents, and families. WHEREAS, injury is the single greatest killer of children causing more deaths than all diseases combined. In the United States during 1988, more than 22,000 children ages zero to 19 died as the result of injury. Injury is also the leading cause of disability for children. An estimated 30,000 children suffer permanent disability from injury in the United States each year. WHEREAS, in 1985 alone, the estimated direct and indirect cost of childhood injuries was $8.3 billion dollars. The lifetime costs of these injuries is estimated to exceed $13 billion dollars nationally. WHEREAS, in California the three leading causes of death from injury for children ,e zero to 14 result from: drowning, homicide, motor vehicle collisions, and as pedestrians struck by a motor vehicle. From 1980 to 1985, 695 children in California were killed through acts of intentional violence. WHEREAS, these so called unintentional and intentional injuries such as drowning, motor vehicle collisions, gun shots, fires and falls are not random 'accidents'. Public Health Officials, The Childhood Injury Prevention Coalition, and the Childrens Coalition recognize that injuries are predictable and preventable. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Contra Costa, California hereby PROCLAIMS October 7, 1991 as "Child Health Day" in Contra Costa and encourages all residents to work towards the prevention of unnecessary death and injury to children through the increased use of air bags, seat belts, and child safety seats in their cars; use of safety helmets while bicycling; installation of isolation fencing around residential pools; installation of smoke detectors; locking away medicines and household chemicals away from children; calling for improved safety standards on cribs, nursery products and toys; and calling for increased state and local gun control laws. PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board members present on this day I hereby certify that the foregoing is a true and correct copy of a resolution entered on the minutes of said Board of Supervisors on the date aforesaid.
