IN THE MATTER OF )
Proclaiming the week of ) RESOLUTION N0. 88/652
October 15, 1988, World Series )
Win Week for the Oakland A's )
WHEREAS, the Oakland A' s Organization has fielded an
extraordinary and truly "professional" baseball team;
WHEREAS, the Oakland A' s have thrilled the Bay Area by
playing consistent, exciting, basic and winning baseball;
WHEREAS, the Oakland A' s drew 2,287,335 fanatic, faithful,
and frenzied fans, many from Contra Costa County;
WHEREAS, Jose Canseco set a new major league record in being
the first player to hit 40 home runs and steal 40 bases;
WHEREAS, in addition to the mighty power of the batting
lineup, the A' s have also had an incredibly outstanding defense all
season;
WHEREAS, Dennis Eckersley set a new record in the number of
saves in a season and led the outstanding pitching staff to an
American League record saves in one season;
WHEREAS, the Oakland A' s also holds the American League ERA
record for the season;
WHEREAS, each Oakland A' s team member set a positive example
for our youth by their preparedness, enthusiasm, confidence in their
abilities, and team spirit;
WHEREAS, the Oakland A' s were the first team to clinch a
division title and finished the season with 104 wins, second highest
number of wins in American League history;
WHEREAS, the Oakland A' s fanned the flames of pennant fever
by winning the first four game sweep of a seven game League
Championship Series from the Boston Red Sox for the American League
pennant, thereby becoming a participant in the World Series;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, does hereby proclaim the week of
October 15, 1988, as World Series Win Week for the Oakland A's.
PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board Members present on
this 11th day of October, 1988.
I hereby certify that the foregoing is a true and correct
copy of an order entered on the minutes of said Board of Supervisors
of the date aforesaid.
