OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA In the Matter of: ) Commending the Coca Cola ) RESOLUTION NO. 86/633 Company. ) WHEREAS the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors on February 5, 1985 expressed publicly its unalterable opposition to the barbaric and inhumane policy of apartheid as practiced by the government of South Africa; and WHEREAS the Board recognizes that corporations continuing to do business with the government of South Africa and operate plants within South Africa thereby contribute to the economy of a government practicing the unacceptable national policy of apartheid; and WHEREAS the Coca Cola Company announced that it will sell its remaining holdings in South Africa as a statement of the opposition to apartheid and of its support for the economic aspirations of black South Africans; and WHEREAS the Coca Cola Company' s objective is to disinvest in a way that creates significant multiracial equity participation in the soft drinks industry with the goal of improving the prospects of black South Africans and increasing their ability to invest in their country' s economy; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY that the Coca Cola Company is COMMENDED for its pioneering and courageous stand to withdraw operations in South Africa as a statement of opposition to apartheid. PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board Members present on this 28th day of October, 1986.
